| John Renyard has been a farmer and investor in
the Australian dairy industry for all of his working career. His
interests have been in developing the industry and understanding
the interaction between the farmer and the dairy company or co-operative.
He has participated as a farmer representative in the dairy farm
organization to state level. In his roles in representative agri-politics
John was a member of the Economics committee of the Victorian Farmers
Federation and before that the Victorian Farmers and Graziers Association.
He was in that role for ten years getting to understand issues of
banking, finance, taxation and currency all with an agribusiness
and farming background. The committee determined policy for the
peak body organizations and the National Farmers Federation.
He became a director of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Company
Limited in 1987 and has been chairman of the company and also of
the joint venture companies that were formed during the company
development of the cheese company and whey protein company in 1993.
Understands the responsibility to nominee company positions elected
from one board to another. He is currently a member of the Nominations
and Remuneration committee of the board of WCBF. Is a Fellow of
the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) with a Diploma
of the Institute having been examined in 1992 As a Fellow of the
Australian Institute of Company Directors has been extending a contact
network and broadening his knowledge in the governance area.
John has participated in study tours of the New Zealand dairy industry
in 1979 and in 1992. In 2001 he participated in a study tour of
the co-operative farm systems of France, Holland, Ireland and the
USA with the support of the Australian DRDC (Dairy Research and
Development Corporation)
John has completed a Masters Degree in Agribusiness at the University
of Melbourne. The degree focuses on agribusiness management areas
of Leadership, Finance, Economics, Marketing, Operation, Strategy
Human Resources and Technology.
John’s particular interest is in the area of corporate governance,
the division between positions of the dairy company and the farmer
and also the interests of the company board members and the interests
of the company. In co-operatives there is always a tendency to pay
all profits through to the supplier to the cost of the company and
the future of the company. The interaction between farmer and company
is of particular interest for the strategic partnership of the entities.
Communication development and field services of the company are
also part of the interest building the relationship between farmers
and their supply company.
